Make Sure You Do: Before You Say “I Do”

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Saundra L. Washington Tina Turner asked an important question in the title of her hit song; Whats Love Got To Do With It? Yes love is important but love don’t pay the bills. It is not be enough to be “in love.” Couples must have the basic skills necessary for building and enhancing the relationship over time. Lasting marriages require partners who are committed to respecting one another, who have gained knowledge about what makes marriage work, and who have developed skills that will enhance rather than deteriorate the relationship. It is mind boggling that so many spend countless hours planning for the great wedding day. Thats right; it is only for one day; a mere drop in the ocean of time. Here today, gone tomorrow; then what? It is just plain ignorant to spend numerous weeks and even months planning for the wedding that last a day and ignore the marriage that is expected to endure for a lifetime. It makes good sense then, to spend at least an equal amount of time preparing for married life. By reading this article, you have taken the first step toward increasing your awareness. I applaud you. Whenever I perform a wedding ceremony, it usually includes these words: Do you promise to love, honor, cherish, and protect him/her, forsaking all others and holding only unto him/her according to Gods holy law; and thus pledge your faithfulness. It is disconcerting that nearly half of all married couples regretted uttering those profound words and have since divorced. I believe that the most egregious mistake these couples made was not spending enough time seriously planning for a lifetime together in marriage. Though most couples do claim to take their wedding vows seriously, often what has been disregarded is really getting to know each other on a level beneath the surface. Women, particularly, seem to approach marriage from a fantasy happy-ever-after mentality. We do not seem to realize that what we think we see is not perfect reality. And, what we think we feel is related to what we think we see. In other words, we tend to approach marriage with a distorted perception of what married life will be like. In a way, it can be analogized to an adolescent girl who always wanted a baby until she actually had one and the reality of parental responsibility ferociously slapped her in the face; or the teen young man who didnt understand that as soon as he hit adulthood, the system would relentlessly seek child support payments from him for each child he has fathered. Keep in mind that who you marry will have a dramatic impact on all aspects of your life; spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical health. Marriage is serious business and should be given serious thought. It is not optional, it is obligatory. Take a long and hard look before you leap. Rev. Saundra L. How To Take The Pain Out Of Performance Reviews

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Lora J Adrianse The Painful Approach For many years, “performance management” was of an annual event dreaded by both the management and the workforce. For a week or two every year the manager would virtually isolate himself and ponder the stack of review forms staring him in the face. Chances are there was very little data tracked, so he’d try to rack his brain for the past year so he could “evaluate” his employees. In the meantime, a silent tension was building within each of the employees. Always anticipating a “surprise”, they had no idea what to expect. After all, “how far back could the manager remember?” and “what will he remember?” Regardless of the outcome, everyone would breathe a sigh of relief when it was over. It’s Different Today Today more than ever before, the entire performance management process is in the spotlight. Companies need factual, reliable systems to make tough business decisions. Performance management data is being used not only to measure individual performance, but also to measure benchmark strength, the potential human capital, and the performance of segments within the company. It’s all crucial today, and it’s here to stay. The timing is perfect for managers to optimize performance review processes and engage each employee in the process. The Possibilities Imagine what it would be like if the annual performance review process transformed into an annual strategy session. No tension, no getting blindsided and no negative energy. A time for the manager and employee to come together to reflect on the past year, formally acknowledge accomplishments, strategize development opportunities and identify goals. Yes, there would still be a fair amount of time involved, but wouldn’t it be worth it if both the manager and the employee could walk away feeling good about it? Creating a partnership approach to the performance review process not only produces powerful results, but also empowers employees. By proactively contributing to the process, employees feel more in-control, and are motivated to perform better and achieve more. How To Create A Partnership Approach To Performance Management The First Ground Rule As with most new processes, communication is the essential factor that can determine the success or failure of your initiative, and especially a change. So, the ground rule is, communicate openly, honestly, often, and completely. Getting Started Start with communication to your team. Tell them what, why, and especially, what’s in it for them. Then schedule a series of meetings with them to work through the details as suggested below. It’s extremely beneficial to get a volunteer to document the outcome of each meeting. After the meeting send the document back to the group to confirm and/or clarify agreements. Establish Shared Understandings Establishing shared understandings and agreements takes the guesswork and assumptions out of the performance review process. Work with your team to create a list of performance management criteria that needs to be understood by all. Some examples: Definitions of each performance competency Definitions of rating scales or systems Performance standards Success indicators What will be measured How it will be tracked Create Support Processes Creating support processes will become nucleus of the partnership approach. In other words, the support processes you create with your team become their critical opportunities to contribute to the process. Again, work with your team to create the processes that will support your performance review process. Some examples: Weekly or bi-weekly meetings to discuss progress, roadblocks, etc. Monthly, quarterly or semi-annual reports to track accomplishments, progress, etc. A proactive ongoing feedback process - both employees and managers actively seek feedback regularly (what’s going well, what can go better, what needs to change) A year-end process for compiling the information and planning for the annual strategy/review discussion A self-review process for employees - managers can request that self-reviews are submitted before the manager writes the review. Integrate The System Now, put your process in action. Think of your “shared understandings” as your guide to performance standards and measurements. Your support processes are the tools you use to gather and compile performance data. Now, all you need to do is to integrate the information into your performance management system and schedule the actual review meeting. Reflect And Improve At the end of each performance review cycle take time to get feedback from your team. It’s as simple as scheduling a meeting or sending an email. It’s a great time to review your shared understandings and support processes. Here are some questions to ask about the process: What went well? What could have gone better? What needs to change? In Summary When it’s time for the annual performance review process both employees and managers have plenty of factual information, will already know how they’re doing, and best of all, will have established relationships and rapport. The annual strategy/review discussion becomes a time for the manager and employee to come together to reflect on the past year, formally acknowledge accomplishments, strategize development opportunities and plan for the upcoming year. And best of all, the painful surprises have been eliminated. About The Author Lora Adrianse is passionate about inspiring the enrichment of growth and development in others. 3 Steps To A Great Job Interview

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Mark Baber Job interview details vary widely from one industry to another and one job candidate to another. That makes it difficult to offer opinions or observations that relate directly to the specifics of your particular job interview. HOWEVER there are some basic, baseline rules that, if followed during a job interview, will enrich your results, because how you exercise these job interview techniques will ultimately determine the result of your job interview. There are three primary activities that influence the results of a job interview. Those are: 1 - written or verbal communications 2 - body language 3 - questions you ask them Written or Verbal Communications Whether presenting your resume, a cover letter, a professional reference, or when using your voice to present critical data about your skill levels and experiences if what you say or write is disorganized, or poorly stated, you may as well have gone fishing. And when you speak, you need to make good sense, your comments should be topic focused, dont be too shy or soft-spoken, and keep good eye contact and listen to what they say to you, dont just talk. If you use inappropriate language or too much street jargon, or slang, dont expect to get the job. And sometimes, saying too much about your background is as bad as not saying enough. Understand that your written and verbal offerings should be coordinated, one supporting the other. Body Language From the moment you enter the job interview area your physical presence begins to influence the end result of your job interview. If you dressed sloppy or too casual, you will immediately stand out as being self-indulgent. If you dressed appropriately, in a dress suit, you will seem sharp, organized, controlled. A firm, friendly hand shake reassures others. A limp handshake is noticeable, leaving the person on the other end of the handshake less than assured about your confidence and drive. Your overall posture should be erect, attentive, make good eye contact with all participants, and soften the event by expressing a pleasant smile. Otherwise, if your posture is weak, your body will slump, your shoulders will slope, you will give the impression that you are fatigued or lazy or disinterested. Dont send that message, sit up straight, but comfortable, keep your neck and shoulders erect, focused. Let your body express what you have to offer. Questions You Ask Them There will come a time in most every job interviews when the interviewer asks you, the applicant, if you have any questions. The questions you ask at this point should illustrate to the interviewer your grasp of their needs, relative to the job, and clearly show your interest in the job. Engage the interviewer as much as they engage you. Dont dominate the interview. During the interview, gather data from the conversation that will help you create the questions you will ask later. Or create a list of key questions before the job interview. Your questions will show your interest in the job. They will also help you gather the information you need to determine the value of the job relative to your goals. A job interview can be a tough assignment. The better prepared you are, verbally and in written word, the better your chances of impressing the hiring authority with the value of your skills and experience. Re-read the above paragraphs. Be aware of the heavy influence that these 3 key areas of the job interview will have upon your job interviews. Our Dream Mobile Data Service Has Arrived

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Paul_Smethers]Paul Smethers Nine years ago, I was fortunate to work for Unwired Planet, a small Silicon Valley company with brilliant innovators trying to enable Internet services on the mobile phone (it later morphed into Openwave Systems). Our task: to dream up what mobile phones could do with Internet capabilities. What we didn’t know then was that it would take nearly a decade to realize these dreams, and it would happen in South Korea first, not America. Even then we knew the mobile Internet was a different paradigm from the wired Internet-people won’t buy books from Amazon.com on their phone, and they won’t do research with Google. Instead, we imagined the mobility of the experience, with phones knowing who we are and where we are. And since it is hard to type on phones, services would rarely ask for text input. To account for the small screens, sites would weed out all but the most important information. News or weather services would work off the phone’s location. Stock symbols or e-mail usernames would automatically be remembered. We are mobile. We want data quick and easy. No, the wired Internet wasn’t our model. What happened? European and American operators sold “the Internet on the phone,” and developers dutifully streamed their complex PC web sites to the mobile phone, barely paring them down for mobile usage. Stock quotes were 18-40 key-clicks away. You couldn’t get the weather in less than 5 minutes. This definitely wasn’t our dream. I was lucky, though, as Openwave sent me on annual research trips to Japan. The Japanese culture and competition led them to develop the world’s greatest mobile data services. Soon they exported camera phones and ringtone downloads to other countries. This still wasn’t our dream, but it was coming closer. In 2005 I went to South Korea to research their services. They had quietly developed better consumer data services than I had seen anywhere else in the world. SK Telecom’s June service is a consumer masterpiece. After I left Openwave early last year, I decided to analyze these markets again, this time freely sharing the results with the public. Here is what I found: Imagine you are 7 years old. You ask your parents for a mobile phone. Do you get it? In South Korea you do. First, you remind mom and dad that the phone will automatically track you (no, your parents don’t have to keep checking where you are; instead, your parents get an SMS when your phone leaves a specified geographic zone, like around your school or home). Next, you remind them that with SK Telecom’s Ting service for children, they will have fixed limits on costs. The phones are also designed for young children, with a fixed limit on how many phone numbers can be stored or used (so you can only call mom and dad) and protection against inappropriate services or usage. Besides, you whine, “everyone else has one…” You are now in high school. You move up to SK Telecom’s TTL service (KTF has a similar service). TTL has TTL Zones, which are cool cafe-style meeting places with free wired Internet access and other mobile services. Also, if you only use the phone in your zones, your costs are much lower. Kids like music, right? Sign up to Melon or Fimm and get all the music downloads you want for only $5 per month. You want My Space? In Korea this is cyworld, and it is available on every mobile operator’s phone. It isn’t their PC web site-that’s inappropriate for a phone-but an easy-to-use, 2 to 3 key-click experience that is so addictive it gets 20 million visitors a month (South Korea only has 48 million citizens). As an adult, you might find Cizle helpful for buying movie tickets and charging them to your phone bill (it sends an SMS with a code you type at the theater to get the tickets). Nate Golf helps you set up your tee times and track your handicap. Need a taxi? Just press a few keys-they know your location and will send it directly. Small business owner? You can remotely monitor your restaurant from your phone while you are away. And yes, you can get a stock quote. How many key-clicks? None. Just open your phone and 1MM scrolls your favorite stock’s quote on a line on your idle screen (along with the weather and local news). Many of these services are also available in Japan, but I found the user interface and reduced typing or scrolling on SK Telecom’s phones to be much more consumer oriented. Check out the full reports at [http://www.consumerease.com/ezinearticles2w.aspx]www.consumerease.com. These services are fascinating, and I can’t wait until they are available here. Shape Up and Have Fun Losing Weight!

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Kim Beardsmore Whether your next season is Spring or Autumn, a change in season is a great time to renew your commitment to weight management and shape up and have fun doing so! Who said losing weight needs to be boring! No so. Here are three fantastic calorie consuming activities that are most enjoyable in the cooler seasons, but somewhat impractical for most people in the height of winter and summer months. Spring is the perfect time to get into the garden before the hot days of summer. If you are just finishing your summer, now is the perfect time to do all those last minute pruning and weeding that was just too hot to do a few weeks ago. There’s nothing like gardening to help tone muscles and burn up additional calories. Weekend Rambling - forget sleepy Sundays, get out and about on a walk with family and friends. Find an opening and play some lively games like football, frisbee or cricket! Walking Holiday - if you normally take ‘lazy beach breaks’ it’s time for a change. There are so many beautiful places to visit that you may never have considered before. Get out and explore….and your legs will get a terrific tone-up! Why Not….Participate in vigorous voluntary work. Give a few hours a week to a good cause. There are plenty of charities that need help with gardening and odd jobs such as painting, handiwork and maintenance. Spend more time playing with the kids in the garden.Forego hotel niceties and enjoy weekends away camping.Take up action cricket or soccer and meet new people in the process. Get the bikes out for a regular leisurely ride or if you feel more energetic, join a cycling club. Start today! If you focus on having energetic fun, you’ll lose weight effortlessly! Migraines Are The Great Equalizers

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Roy Klienwachter Migraine headaches must be one of the great equalizers that tell you in no uncertain terms to stop what ever you are doing now! Anyone who has suffered from this kind of headache will be able to relate to this article, it is something like childbirth; its not something you can fully appreciate unless you have experienced it. I must have been about eleven or twelve years old when I had my first one. I was at a bus stop in the middle of a snow blizzard waiting for the school bus to arrive when it first hit me. It was probably the glare off the snow that triggered it and it wasnt until years later that I could put a name to the experience. My headaches were classic and during these episodes there was only one thing that I really wanted more than life itself and that was to die. I went through self analysis and even kept a log of the headaches for years and I could find no pattern, they just simply happened at any time and any place. Whatever triggered the migraines seemed to be inconsistent. Light and hunger was a couple of them but I am sure it was in combination with other things. As I grew older they slowed down for awhile and at one point I never had one for almost a year and I thought I had it licked. Lately they are coming back with more frequency. I lead a fairly stress free life and meditate daily. The headaches happen during my waking hours and in my sleep and as with all physical ailments there is a root thought that supports it that I havent found it. I befriended the idea that maybe people who had migraines were special and that new awareness would come from the experience, I thought it may have been Gods way of communicating and my brain was just being overloaded. I looked for patterns in the swirling lights that flooded my inner and outer vision. I sat quietly in the dark and waited for messages or meaning, nothing happened except for the nausea and pain. Until a few years ago there was only one thing that was inevitable, I had to stop what ever I was doing and lay down for an hour in the dark. I considered myself one of the lucky ones that were not de-habilitated for days or had to go to the hospital for shots. I got angry, resentful and just plain pissed off when they happened; I tried to look for the silver lining and found none, so I gave into them when they happened. A few years ago I changed my thoughts about how I would react to the headaches when they occurred. I decided that I would carry on with my life and ignore them as much as possible and in doing so I found some measure of success. It may well be because over fourty years have elapsed since my first one, the blurry lasts about half an hour, and I no longer get the nausea. My headaches are not as piercing, they still last for a day or so but are very mild and I seldom take any pain relievers for them. I have changed my thoughts about the events when they happen and I try not to let it interfere too much with my routine. I have turned an undesirable event into something more positive. I used the headaches as a warning sign; an amber light that says slow down. This awareness is a major change from the red light that stopped everything a few years ago. The lethargy that follows for the next two days does not allow me to get back into full swing immediately and the shift into high gear is gradual. There is nothing that can not wait, I keep going even during the blurry period without medication, but I do it on my time and on my terms. I have learned to give up on the idea that everything has to be done now. I am generally in good health and seldom get sick and never get into serious accidents. The migraines are not something that I want to have consciously I am not the masochistical, but they have perhaps served me well in slowing me down and avoiding other more serious problems. I am highly motivated to be productive at all times and even at rest will read a book or do something fruitful. I do not look forward to these headaches but I do not try to avoid them, and I use the opportunity to re-evaluate my circumstances at the time. I had another migraine yesterday morning while I was looking forward to getting up early, and writing this article, albeit not about migraines. I had to get my web site ready to upload later in the evening; this routine takes me half a day to accomplish. The first symptoms were clearly in front of me as soon as the monitor on my computer had warmed up. I did not get this article finished until today and my site was not uploaded last night; it will be twenty four hours late. The day was spent wandering around doing very mundane things that was my usual routine on a Sunday. I know that all things happen for a reason, I do not believe in coincidence or chance. I didnt have a topic when I woke up yesterday and this article needed to be printed. I believe that someone somewhere is receiving help from my experience. We are all connected and it was appropriate and timely for this headache, for my benefit and that of another. Life always leaves signs for us as we walk our walk. Most of the time we do not see them or we ignore them and some of us have to be hit of the head pretty hard in order for the message to get through. I am reminded that we are spiritual beings first and the body is just an extension of that mind. We are not victims of circumstance, we are creating them. Freud said that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but I know its not in your mouth by accident. All things have purpose; it is how we experience these things in our own unique way that determines whether we consider them good or bad. I have moved away from the good thing and the bad thing and have replaced them with what works and what does not work for me. Obviously the migraines are working for me even though I am not satisfied that this is all there is to it. I have chosen to use them to my advantage and see them as a sign to slow down. Life has no purpose other than the purpose you give it. Signs may be just signs, but they have purpose. It is the individual that decides what that purpose is on a conscious level. Signs are physical manifestations of something that is going on inside; a thought process. For me the migraine experience has been a painful equalizer. Roy E. Women Who Are Attracted To You Will Find A Way To Meet You

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Teddy Shabba If a woman is attracted to you she will find time to be with you. The stronger the attraction the more likely she is to miss or not do something else just to be with you. When first dating or talking to a woman it is important that you realize she can never be too busy to see you. If she turns down your request to meet you for anything other than school (a class), her working hours, or a family tragedy (pets don’t count); her attraction level is low. Unless she counters with whatever it is she is doing during the time you suggested to meet, then it could go either way. Yet, when a woman does counter no matter what you must turn it down in order to increase your attraction level, unless it is something that is a once in a lifetime event like tickets to the Super Bowl. Accepting her counter offer actually lowers her attraction level for you since in her mind it means you didn’t have anything good to offer her in the first place. Men who accept a woman’s counter offer generally discover that meeting to be the only one to ever take place unless she changes her mind and cancels that meeting as well. If you find yourself talking to a woman on the phone a lot (more than 3 times) and her coming up with reasons as to why the two of you can not meet up. Realize that her attraction level is high enough to talk to you on the phone but not high enough for her to do anything more than talk to you on the phone. In addition, talking on the phone does not increase a woman’s attraction level for you once she has decided that all you are worth is someone for her to talk on the phone with. Unexpected Challenge of “The Sandwich Generation”

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

By Susan Brooks-Thoman Would you call his house and ask if I am there? Now why on earth would she want me to do that except possibly to check up on him and see if he is there. After asking, I am able to confirm that that is exactly what she wants to find out. She has not heard from him yet today and is feeling insecure. She does not use those words, she is not thinking that clearly. Willing to admit that she is feeling jealous, I have to calm her down and explain that the only person she has to feel jealous of is dead. After all, he is 62 years old and has only been a widow for about a year. Yes, this is a phone call from my mother, NOT my 16 year old daughter, although the next phone call could have the same content with different players involved. The scenario gives The Sandwich Generation a new twist. I knew that being sandwiched between taking care of my Mother and my children was going to involve my time, my finances and my energy. I was not ready for my energy to be sapped by giving dating advice to both my daughter and my mother at the same time. Getting my daughter through her first heartbreak was also heartbreaking for me. Even though she ended the relationship because she caught the boy lying to her, she hated that she hurt him and she cried all night. Mom on the other hand discovered that the most recent boyfriend could not commit to having dinner each night, never mind commit to a relationship with another person. Mom was ready to commit to having an exclusive relationship. He was not ready and after dating for six months he broke it off. She was crushed and she cried all night. I am never quite sure which loved one I will be loaning a shoulder to cry on, who will want a hug because they just met the latest Mr Right. At this point I am just ecstatic that my 89 year old grandmother has no interest in dating I do not have the energy for a triple-decker-club sandwich! Susan is an average mother of two daughers, one who is of dating age and also the daughter of a widowed mother who has entered the dating world. She spends her time as most women but found herself perplexed when trying to counsel both her teenage daugher and her senior citizen mother at the same time in the areas of dating and relationships. It gave an exhausting new definition to the phrase “Sandwich Generation”. How Do Instant Payday Loans Work?

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_Johnston]Scott Johnston Instant payday loans are short-term loans that are useful to individuals who are in need of liquidity between paydays. The process of acquiring a payday loan is simple; a job and an active checking account are the only requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to qualify for an instant payday loan. Most loan companies support online transactions; upon approval of an online application, the loan amount is deposited into the receivers checking account. The facility of online transactions enables borrowers to apply anytime and access the money as well as return it with minimum fuss. A repayment plan is worked out at the time of applying for the loan. Usually, the loans are due next payday but the period of loan can be extended by paying extra fees. Instant payday loans of up to $ 1,000 can be availed subject to the applicants monthly income and the laws of the state. The fees involved include transaction fees and interest. Since instant payday loans do not require a credit check or an extensive background check and are available to everybody, including those with bad credit, the interest rates are relatively higher. Sometimes, instead of interest, lenders may charge a flat fee either by the day or for a fixed period. The average cost per $ 100 of the loan amount may be in the range of $ 15 to $ 20. Lending companies are required by federal law to post an annual APR consisting of the transaction costs as well as interest rates. The borrower can use the APR to compare the rates offered by payday companies. Online instant payday loan providers can be checked and approached without having to leave home. Several online lenders offer loans at reduced rates or with zero transaction fees for first-time borrowers. Instant payday loans are easier to get than personal loans and their quick turnaround time makes them an attractive alternative for those in urgent need of cash. Instant payday loans do not affect the credit score of an individual if the loans are repaid on time; multiple open accounts and use of credit can affect the credit score while using credit cards or availing personal loans. The process of acquiring an instant payday loan involves the signing of a loan agreement by the lender and the borrower. The agreement contains the terms and conditions of the loan, contact information of both parties, fees for bounced checks and late repayment, and any obligations that are binding on either party. Non-payment of an instant payday loan does not lead to arrest but may result in a case in a civil court, which may lead to a borrowers assets being placed on lien to recover the loaned amount and court costs. Great Cheap Wedding Reception Venues

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Nicola Ray The venue for your cheap wedding reception is crucial to keeping your costs down. If your budget is tight, the venue is one area where you could really save some cash. There are plenty of ideas out there that cater for the tightest of budgets, but also give you the flexibility to make your day special. Here are some ideas for you to investigate: Local Authority Buildings Believe it or not, your local council may have some gems hidden up its sleeve when it comes to venues. They often have old stately homes that have been turned into local authority centres for training or education. Often these can be hired out and as their training centres they often come with budget accommodation attached. One particular gem is Lea Green, run by Derbyshire Education Authority. I attended a lovely wedding reception here and the price was a steal. To find these gems, start with your local councils website. Village Halls Since the Millennium there have been a number of new village halls built in sleepy villages around the country. Some are beautifully designed with airy glass ceilings or outside patio areas that can make a beautiful venue. The benefit of village halls is that also come with catering facilities and equipment. Most village halls can be hired for a couple of hundred pounds, and normally include all your tables, chairs and equipment too. Local Sports Clubs From the rugby to rowing, most sports have a local club house and if you have a friend or relative whos a member then youll probably be able to use it. As with village halls, the hire charge will be very low. Youll probably also find that they may offer low cost catering too. Start asking around. Public Houses There are hundreds of pubs up and down the country that have great gardens, idyllic riverside settings or great function rooms which can be the perfect setting for a unique or casual wedding. Theyll also be able to do your catering at great prices. So start thinking differently about the outdoor venues for your cheap wedding, there maybe some that surprise you with idyllic settings and picture perfect backdrops.
