Maybe some of it is. But the Guardian newspaper recently reported on many systematic reviews which demonstrate that pharmaceutical industry studies show positive results far more often than those funded by independent sources. Is this coincidence? Do they just happen to get more of the results that they want? It seems improbable. But it’s not likely that drug companies directly tamper with clinical drug trials in any criminal way. Nor are they likely to change the reported results afterwards either. That kind of blatant dishonesty is probably very rare in drug research, because it isn’t necessary. The drug companies have more subtle ways to get the results they are hoping for. To begin with, a company can design a study in a biased way. A simple example: even if a study is theoretically double-blind, a company could create procedures which let doctors administering a new pharmaceutical know who is getting it, versus who is getting a placebo instead. Just the expectation of doctors that a patient’s condition will improve often results in more reported improvement. It’s a fairly crude manipulation, but there are certainly other ways to design a study to increase the chance of positive results being shown. Perhaps the most common way to manipulate the results of drug research, is to selectively report those results. Several recent investigations show that this is common. Data that doesn’t support the conclusions the companies want is often hidden or thrown out. Why does this matter? Suppose a new drug is given to ten groups of people who share a given disease or condition. Now suppose that on average, the people in five of the groups have good results, but the subjects in the other five groups get worse or have no improvement. People often get better or worse for many reasons, so this is common. It is why many trials are necessary to have statistically significant results. What if in this case, the company decided that only the five trials with positive results are important enough to report, and they quietly get rid of the data from the others. A drug that has no real benefit on average now appears to have helped in every research trial - at least all those that the rest of the world hears about. It is bad science, of course, but unfortunately it is just one of the ways that pharmaceutical companies play with data to get the results they want to see. Scientists have been recommending a simple and inexpensive solution to this problem for decades: a compulsory international trials register. If companies want to use the results of any drug research trials to get a new pharmaceutical approved, they would have to register the trial before it begins. With this simple registry, trials that don’t give the result wanted can’t just disappear - they have to all be accounted for. Of course the drug companies are fighting against this simple idea. By Gregg Hall 8% of children and 2% of adults in the United States are estimated to be affected by some form of allergy to food. Of that percentage, the most common food to elicit some form of allergic reaction is peanuts, which affects about three million Americans. When the immune system overreacts to a usually safe food, it is called an allergic reaction. The most severe reaction is called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis (a sudden drop in blood pressure) can sometimes, but rarely be fatal (killing about 1 of 2.5 million). Otherwise, common symptoms of food allergy are things such as hives, eczema, asthma and gastrointestinal symptoms (i.e. vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping). Why do some people get food allergies? Could it be a result from genetics? Because previous twin studies have shown that there does seem to be a high rate of heritability of allergic diseases, a British study was conducted to compare the incidence of peanut allergy among siblings with general population incidence. The study involved 58 sets of twins, 14 of which were identical, and 44 of which were fraternal. These twins were recruited for having at least one member of the pair having a peanut allergy. 70 of the 115 had a history of peanut allergy. 64% of the identical twins both had allergic reactions to peanuts, which was followed by a mere 7% between the fraternal twins. The conclusion was that based on the data and a model considering environmental and genetic factors, researchers calculated a heritability rate of 82%-87% for peanut allergy. The problem with this conclusion? Though the British study showed a genetic component in peanut allergies, environmental factors may have biased the results. When they did not consider genetic factors, the rate dropped to just under 19%. A group of researchers in the July 2000 Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the peer-reviewed, scientific journal of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) agree that Genetics play a significant role in peanut allergies. Lead researcher Scott Sicherer, M.D. along with some of his colleagues from Virginia and Belgium performed a twin study. Their intent was to see if genetic factors influenced peanut allergy. They were checking this by comparing the incidence of peanut allergy between the identical twins and the fraternal twins. Twin studies are used frequently to provide information on how environmental and genetic factors should be compared and treated. Because there has yet to be solid evidence that there is a direct link between hereditary and allergies, many agree there needs to be more research and more studies dedicated to examine the role between genetics and allergies, so that we may reach a conclusion to this question. To a person that is in tune a bus advertisement can be saying take one step at a time and a sign on a road saying one way can be saying something. God is a heavenly Father but somehow the church and preaching has made Him become mysterious. I have a beloved friend who is a prophet and for two hours tonight he was sharing some of his conversations with God. I told him he should write a book and as a person who has two books in the process of becoming a reality I suppose I see potential everywhere for books. He told me that the reason Abraham was such a friend of God was that he not only obeyed but Abraham would listen and cry with the pain of God. How I got the gift of prophecy There wasnt one prayer that was prayed for me. No one laid hands on my to receive the gift of prophecy. It was simple. One day the Holy Spirit told me to go into a Mc Donalds store and speak to a stranger who he described what she was wearing and to bring her a message. I go into more detail in that encounter in the article prophetic evangelism on this site. It was simple God had a message for a women and I went and delivered it. In that prophetic word I received a vision and described the vision to the girl and this confirmed the prophet word was coming from God. Then over time it started more and more and the Lord would give me a message for a person. One day at church I went forward to an alter call for prayer and our assistant pastor said that the Lord wants me raised up in the gift of prophecy and from that day on I began to prophesy in church meetings. I have ran a website on the Internet for a year from 2005 to 2006 where I did about 400 prophecies for free online, and got quite a bit a good feedback and some really detailed feedback. I did this prophecy in December 2005 and the Lord used a vision to show me this prophecy. KEY: The Father speaks prophecy in black. I am glad that the Lord sees me as a strong tower. His Word and joy is indeed my strength. Yet, an enemy is coming against you, one that has won man wars and one that is quite prepared to conduct a long and sustained siege. He has supplies and provisions and is quite willing to put the time in to see victory. This army is headed up by Lucifer, a warrior mighty in battle and mighty in strategy and whose taunts over the walls of your city to your people bring much fear and dread into the people of your city. This is tough to take. I have been under tremendous pressure and attacks. I lost my job; my family has been in need. I have been overwhelmed by the problems - I sometimes feel like I am going to drown in my problems. Yet the river that flows through your city springs up from within the city and cannot be blocked by the enemy and that river is the Holy Spirit. It will not only give you life, but it will take away the stains and taunts of the enemy if you wash in it and soak yourself with it. Halleluiah!!!! I will hold on to this promise. Yes - Holy Spirit flow! I need you Holy Spirit. I drink from your fountain. In this attack, this sustained attack Lucifer will make a stand and will stay for a long time with a determined effort against you. Your prayers will not send him away and only by putting on your armour each day will you be protected from his fiery darts, and those taunts that reach you will have to be washed away by my Spirit, my Sons blood and the Word of God. A friend recently encouraged me and asked me to put on the amour of God each day. I will do this everyday and cover myself with the Blood of Jesus and meditate on God’s Word. Thank you God for the instruction. It is no use praying for me to defeat him and send him away, for like Job I have given him permission for this attack. A few weeks ago, while crying out to God, I said “O God why does this happen, why do you let all these things happen”. And I heard Father God saying, ‘I have allowed Satan to test you, like I did Job.” As it goes on you will run out of energy and your people will talk in whispers about giving in and just surrendering. Soon the whispers will grow into open talks and arguments with raised voices. There is a lot of talk by my friends and family about me, my choices and all that is happening to me. Indeed you will reach a place where you simply find yourself at the end of yourself. I feel like I am in a pit with no where to go, nothing else to try out. Everything I try to do to get out of my situation has failed. This is the place where all heaven above and all the hosts of Lucifer will look on to see what will happen, just as they did when my son hung on the cross. God give me strength to stay strong and glorify you in all this. At this point the only way to victory is for you to totally die to self in EVERY area of your life. Few people on earth ever do this and few people HAVE to with my grace and my love. Jesus, Help me to die to self in every area of my life. Help me not to try and get solutions in my own strength. But to rest in God’s grace But you WILL have to DIE If you don’t you will be defeated and never will you rise again in victory. From the day you die, my Spirit will take over and run your every decision and your every work. From that day on you will become mighty and powerful in my kingdom and on that day I will be your strong tower. Amen In time when the enemy is convinced that he can’t defeat you at that time, He will leave with my permission and wait for another day. The enemy is defeated in Jesus Name. From that time when the enemy retreats many will have heard of your battle and your city will be one where the weary souls will come to bathe in your river and be refreshed by your words and your joy. From that day, you will do deep inner healing in the lives of many and my name will be glorified in your city forevermore. Another prophet had prophesied that God would use me to minister to the hurting. I have spoken and so it will be. We together will see victory, you have it in print, and my prophet has declared it, hold onto this word in the battle. I am holy and one day you will walk in that holiness. Be blessed and fight well. Help me in my battle Lord! Your loving Father. You can see that this was a very well received prophetic word and very needed by this lady at this time and so I was used in a great way to bring comfort , hope and direction to a persons life. One day I said a prayer that took me to the heart of a prophet One day when speaking to Jesus I asked Him if I could be his friend in a two way friendship. I told him that I was happy that he was always listening to me and helping me in my struggles but would he be able to have a two way relationship with me and share His pain and struggles with me. I wasnt even sure that was biblical that Jesus would have pain. From the day I prayed that prayer my world got dark as I started to feel how God felt about people, situations and what was moving his heart. I did now know at that time I was asking to have the heart of a prophet but form that day on I can watch the News on TV and have a running commentary from the Holy Spirit talking to me. If you prophesy God wants you to be a prophet God seems to lack a lot of really good prophets but being a prophet is not something you really want to rush into. Not that you could appoint yourself anyway! Yianni has been to heaven at least twice, once in vision where he was at the wedding supper of the Lamb, whilst I have been to heaven a few times. 2. I learned to pray through watching Yiannis prayers affect my life. Sometimes I have been hard headed about things and all Yianni has done is go and pray and have me do what he feels I have to do and within a few days I have told him God is telling me to do such and such what he prayed about. 3. Certainly with media news ratings influence the intensity of the content and some even use scare tactics to insure the audience share, however that being said there are some basic facts concerning child obesity. Percentage of one’s body fat is another vital measurement in the obesity equation even though matrix differs between girls and boys. As an example a body fat number of 25% of the total body weight with young males would put them in the obese category while the same for young females would be 32% of body fat. The difference in the numbers is simply because females naturally carry a higher percent of body fat throughout their lives than males do. A healthy adult male checks in at about 15% while the same healthy female would be looking at about 27%. Just as with adults, for children struggling with obesity the path to reducing excess body fat is a two pronged approach of exercise and a healthier diet. By John Blenkin Water in watercolor painting technique is of equal importance to the pigment. Water is not just medium to make the pigment flow during application but an integral part of the pigment itself when applied and on drying leaves a permanent record of its former presence. Water should be fresh wholesome and taken from a known reliable source. It should smell fresh and sweet in the same way as potable water does to the palate. Use water with a neutral pH acid alkali ratio or distilled. Falling temperatures humidity chemical content each affect how the water behaves during its use. This affects the drying times of the painting. The appearance of washes too is affected by dry times as the position of pigment particles moves more during longer dry times. This is because the supporting board is given a tilt to prevent puddling of the water at inappropriate places on the ground [paper]. Greater movement of the pigment particles lifts the pigment from one area of the ground and precipitates it to another. This alters the original tonal balance of the pigment. When the wash was laid the color effect was one thing but when dry it becomes altered. To bring your wash to the result you wish in this instance you need to understand the water as much as the pigment in the application technique. Dry times are also affected by the condition of the air and the type of wash being laid down. For wet washes on dry grounds [papers] the variations of drying conditions seem endless. If the air is warm the dry time will be less. If the air is warm humid it will be more. If the air is cold the wash will take longer to dry because evaporation of the water from the wash will appear to take forever to dry. If the air is moving such as it usually is out doors dry times will be quicker than the air conditions indoors. For example dry warm moving air outdoors will make dry times almost immediate. Cold humid still air outdoors will be long and the effect difficult to judge. The condition of the air and its effect on water dry times for more or less standard washes can be even more pronounced when wet in wet washes are used. If the ground [paper] has water within its thickness ready to receive a wet wash dry times can be doubled. The amount of water to be absorbed will vary according to its thickness. This thickness affects dry times of wet in wet washes more than it does in thinner grounds. Final results are more difficult to judge. This article is not about washes but about water. The technique of laying down washes or water containing pigment is another ball game to be treated in these articles elsewhere. Water will cause thin grounds to buckle. Buckling in effect is irregular stretching. The more water used the greater liability there is to buckling which is also a variation of dry times within the ground. The greater the water content of the wash the thicker the ground needs to be. Thick dry papers absorb water quicker from watercolor to dry with firmer stronger tonal values. Uneven dry times in a wash will make the wash appear patchy or uneven and spoil the finished work. Uneven dry times will also make it impossible to lay down further washes and the original unevenness will show through later washes. Too much water will make a wash look weak when it dries even if drying is even. Loss of pigment strength will result in loss of color and tonal balance. Water dry times will be affected by time of day rising or falling temperatures variations in humidity and the seasons of the year. Also altitude above sea level will affect air density related to temperatures. Water hardness or softness will affect longevity of the painting hence the need for neutral Ph value of water as well as in the ground. Textured papers loved by watercolorists need more water. Dry times of water affect speed of work. Waiting for washes to dry takes away spontaneity from the work. If working to beat the clock dry times are important and washes will need to be drier than at other times. Here the subject of the painting does not decide technique. Outdoor quick dry painting favors less water. Water left overnight should not be used next day because of bacteria and possible fungus growth. Sniff to smell if the water to detect if it is even slightly off or tainted. If you are doubtful about the water it must be discarded. Old pigmented watercolor has a vile smell. Get rid of this and clean where it may have spilled. There are many other aspects of interest about water but these are better dealt with when discussing technique and specific painting objectives.
